NAIROBI, Kenya- Upcoming footballer from Kibera All Stars FC, Dennis Onyango praised the Kits for Africa campaign on Friday afternoon as his team and 15 others from Kibera received donations courtesy of SportPesa.

Onyango, a midfielder with arguably one of the best teams from Africa’s biggest slum, explained that the hardships that the young players face include lack of jerseys, balls and sufficient playing grounds.

The initiative by the global entertainment and technology firm is one in-conjunction with their European football partners to provide kits to aid in the development of the young talent in the continent.

“I am sure I speak for all of my teammates and other team representatives when I say that we are very grateful to SportPesa for remembering us.

“There is loads of talent in the hood and most never have proper jerseys to train or play with and such an initiative helps us remember that football can be our way out,” Onyango stated.

Former Gor Mahia FC custodian Shaban Odhoji, who has also played football in the area and currently runs a program that helps upcoming goalkeepers from the impoverished area, graced the handover ceremony.

Odhoji was released by the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) champions at the end of last season and is currently unattached. He too, had some few words of encouragement for the players gathered at the Shake pitch in Kibera.

“I know the troubles young players in the hood face and I want to thank SportPesa for coming and providing all these teams with kits.

“A simple jersey can go a long way in even boosting a young players morale and I hope that these will help you maintain your focus and better yourselves,” the 2017 SportPesa Cup Golden Glove winner underlined.

The Kits for Africa initiative was launched in 2016 and has since been pivotal in providing jerseys and other football material to teams all across the country, including rehabilitation centers in order to restore hope to all who are a part of the beautiful game.

“These jerseys are to help you in training or even games and also to motivate you. Keep believing and never forget that football can take you places,” SportPesa’s Head of Public Relations Lola Okulo added.
