RABAT, Morocco- Naomi Too and Gaudencia Makokha handed Kenya a first medal at the ongoing Africa Games (AG) in Morocco by winning silver in women’s beach volleyball on Tuesday night.

The duo lost in straight sets of 13-21 and 15-21 to Doaa Elghobashy and Farida El Askalany of Egypt who bagged gold.

Head coach Patrick Owino was elated with the outcome saying the pair outdid themselves as it was the first time Kenya was reaching a final in the discipline in the continental showpiece.

“We gave our all but we lost to a better side. I’m happy to say we are contented with the results,” Owino underlined after the crunch final.

On their way to the finals, Kenya beat Mozambique 21-18 and 21-15 while Egypt outfoxed Mauritius 21-9 and 21-19.

Apart from sending Mozambique who reached the 2015 finals, Kenya also edged out continental title holders Nigeria in the quarters.

“In 2015, we finished fourth after losing to Rwanda in the third-place playoffs, since then we have been tightening our grip and the outcome has been seen in Morocco,” Owino underscored.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged Team Kenya to make the country proud in the 12th edition of the games.

“Kindly represent us well with pride, with excellence and discipline. Put the country first. Let your effort be seen. Give your best in the competition,” Uhuru reiterated while handing over the flag to team captain Julius Yego and Deputy Mercy Moim early in the week.
