NAIROBI, Kenya- Sofapaka FC’s striker Umaru Kasumba has vowed to win the 2018/19 Golden Boot Award despite the stiff competition he is facing with only two SportPesa Premier League (SPL) games to go.

Kasumba was speaking on Friday morning at the Eastleigh High School where he was named the SportPesa/Sports Journalists Association of Kenya April Player of the Month for a second time this season.

Kasumba edged SPL top scorer, Allan Wanga of Kakamega Homeboyz FC and another seasoned striker, Wycliffe Ochomo to the gong in February and outdid himself to bag the award again two months later.

The Ugandan forward had an outstanding month in April, bagging seven out of the eight goals that his club managed to score as they finished the month unbeaten with three wins and four draws.

“I am very grateful to receive this award for the second time this season. I thank God, my coach and teammates because without them this would not be possible,” Kasumba told SportPesa News after receiving the prize that comes with a KSh100,000 cheque and 49-inch smart television from electronics firm LG .

The meek forward began with a brace against lowly Zoo FC in a 2-0 win before stepping up to take a 95th minute penalty to sink Kenya Commercial Bank FC a week later.

He then earned a point for his side with a goal against Kariobangi Sharks FC before his lone goal sunk Sony Sugar FC and he capped off the month with yet another brace in a thrilling 2-2 Mathare United FC draw.

Despite his goal scoring antics, Kasumba was left out of the Ugandan Cranes Africa Cup of Nations squad but he maintains a positive attitude.

“I’m happy despite being left out of the AFCON team. I’m a believer of everyone has their time, even if it isn’t right now I know my time will come and I will be ready.

“I have been approached by a European club and I’m still awaiting their invite but for now my main focus is to finish the league with my club,” Kasumba explained.

Kasumba trails current SPL top scorer Allan Wanga (18) by a single goal as the season draws to a close with both strikers as well as Ulinzi Stars FC’s Enosh Ochieng’ (16) all seeking the coveted Golden Boot Award.

“You can expect to see a different Kasumba in the two remaining games.
