The men’s
national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, picked their second successive win at the
ongoing 2023 Rugby Africa 7s Cup taking place in Harare, Zimbabwe as they
whitewashed Namibia 50-0 in their second Pool B game on Saturday.
Having beaten Nigeria 34-10 in the group opener, the Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua coached side once again showed their pedigree as Patrick Odongo, Vincent Onyala and John Okoth all scored two tries to seal the emphatic win.
Kabras Sugar’s Kevin Wekesa and George Ooro from Strathmore Leos also got in on the scoring act with a try apiece to maintain Kenya’s unblemished start.
Odongo, who is making his debut in the team, showed a clean pair of heels to open the scoring for the team with a try right under the posts that was converted by Tony Omondi.
Onyala then touched down at the corner to extend the lead to 12-0 before Wekesa bulldozed his way on the other end.
Onyala got his brace with Kenya’s fourth try as Okoth added the fifth. Unselfish play from Okoth who had crossed the whitewash allowed Odongo to get his second after being given the ball for the touch down.
Okoth would get his second minutes later before Ooro sold a dummy at the corner before divinf=g over to seal the 50-0 win.
The results leaves Shujaa assured of a place in the quarterfinals ahead of their final pool clash against Zambia at 1634EAT.
The 12-team tournament is serving as the African qualifiers to the 2024 Olympics where only the winner will book the automatic ticket to Paris, France next year.
The second and third placed teams will have to go through a final qualification Repechage tournament in June 2024 where they will join teams from Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America and South America with the winner of that event taking the 12th and final slot to the Olympics.
