NAIROBI, Kenya- The current SportPesa Premier League (SPL) top scorer and AFC Leopards SC forward John Mark Makwatta was on Wednesday named the Sports Journalists of Kenya (SJAK) Player of the Month for September.

The clinical forward finished off the September fixtures with a brace against lowly Chemelil Sugar FC in a 4-0 thrashing.

The former Al-Nasr striker joined Leopards during the last transfer window and after a loss to Kakamega Homeboyz FC and a goalless draw, he scored the clubs first goal of the season in a 1-0 win against Wazito FC.

Makwatta garnered 15 votes to receive the award which comes with a handsome KShs. 100,000 and a 49-inch television from partners LG.

Gor Mahia FC's new captain Kenneth Muguna came a close second with 14 votes while another Leopards player Benjamin Ochan was third.

There is no doubt that the forward will also be in contention for the October award after he continued his goalscoring exploits most recently with another brace in a 2-1 win over Sofapaka FC last weekend in Narok.

Leopards will hope he can continue his fine scoring run when they go up against Ulinzi Stars in Machakos on Sunday as they prepare for the biggest game on the SPL calendar, the Mashemeji Derby.
