NAIROBI, Kenya- Gor Mahia FC have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Kenya Premier League (KPL) table if they can manage a win against lowly Nzoia Sugar FC on Sunday.

The record KPL winners reclaimed top spot on Wednesday afternoon after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Sofapaka FC at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

Lawrence Juma and reliable captain Kenneth Muguna both got their names on the scoresheet to secure all three points, moving them to 41, two ahead of Kakamega Homeboyz FC.

Tusker FC (38), who are in third place, are not in action this weekend and could finish the weekend level on points with currently fourth-placed Kenya Commercial Bank FC (KCB).

Second-place Homeboyz will be going for nothing less than all three points when they host Wazito FC (11) at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Stewart Hall’s side are on a seven-match losing streak, most recently a 3-0 demolition by Posta Rangers FC (28), leaving them languishing in 14th, only six points above the basement side Chemelil Sugar FC (5).

A match that has the potential to be the highlight fixture of the weekend sees Ulinzi Stars FC (35) welcome AFC Leopards SC (31) to the Afraha Stadium on Sunday.

Only one place separates the two sides but Leopards will need to show out if they are to make an attempt to break Ulinzi’s stellar 16-match unbeaten streak.

Both teams boast strikers who are in top form but Leopards will blow their trumpet louder seeing as they have the KPL top scorer John Mark Makwatta in their squad.

Rangers aim to make it four wins in a row as they take on struggling Bandari FC (18), while Western Stima FC (30) hope to bounce back from the KCB defeat with a win against bottom club Chemelil.

A tough mid-table battle is also on the cards as Sofapaka FC (26) prepare to battle it out against Mathare United FC (25).

Mathare were held to a 2-2 draw by lowly Zoo FC on Wednesday afternoon but Salim Babu’s charges will need to rediscover their winning touch if they are to maintain their top 10 standing.

Newcomers Kisumu All Stars FC (8) have the chance to climb out of the relegation zone if they can manage a win against Kariobangi Sharks FC (13) on Sunday.

All Stars are on a devastating run of form, having lost nine games in a row while their opponents have still only managed two wins the entire season.
