Kiptum’s wife reveals wedding plans before untimely death

The late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum was to wed in April this year according to his widow Asenath Cheruto but that will not be the case following his untimely demise.

Cheruto made the revelations during the funeral service of the deceased which was held in Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwet County on Friday 23 February.

“We were planning to tie our note in a colorful wedding ceremony in April, 2024 but God’s plans are greater. I will still make my vows of love even in your rest,” stated an emotional Cheruto as she read her tribute.

The mother of two further promised to stay strong for the sake of their two young children and to always make them smile.

“My dear love I can’t learn how to say goodbye to you. It is unbelievable that today I have learned to stay with our beloved kids without you coming home again. I mourn my love, I have cried until no more.

I will miss you and your love forever until we meet again. But I promise to gather my strength for the sake of our children. I hope the spirit world will inspire me to stand as a pillar to our children. I promise to make them smile in your honor. I will make you happy all the time,” she continued.

Kiptum died alongside his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana in a tragic road accident along the Eldoret – Kaptagat road.

Prior to his demise, he had set a new marathon world record of 2:00.35 at the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

His time was more than 30 seconds faster than the previous world record that was set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

Kiptum was seeking to become the first human being to run a marathon in under two hours at the 2024 Rotterdam Marathon that was scheduled to be held in the Netherlands on Sunday, April 14.
