Kenya set to host 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN)

An official despatch from State House Kenya confirmed Kenya would host the 8th edition of the tourney.
- The Kenyan Cabinet Office confirmed the development in an official despatch on Monday evening.
- CHAN is a biennial tournament that consists of 18 nations. The participating teams must consist of players only playing in their national league competitions.
- Kenya was awarded right to host the 2018 edition of the tournament but was stripped of the rights due to unpreparedness.
Kenya is
set to host the 2024 African Nations Championship, popularly known as CHAN.
This is according to an official despatch released on Monday evening by the Cabinet Office under the Executive Office of The President.
In the communique posted on the official State House social media pages, the cabinet meeting revealed that Kenya had been selected to host the continental championship in 2024 as well as other two footballing events.
“In addition to AFCON 2027, Kenya has also been selected to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in September, 2024; the CECAFA Under-18 Championship in November, 2023; and the AFCON Under-15 (Pan- African Schools Football) CECAFA Region Championship in December, 2023,” part of the statement read.
The news of hosting CHAN 2024 comes less than two weeks since the country won the bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.
As part of the country’s preparations for the AFCON 2027 tournament and CHAN 2024, the Cabinet also approved the renovations of three stadia as well as the construction of a brand-new complex.
“In a bid to elevate Kenya's standing as a sporting powerhouse, Cabinet approved various construction and renovation projects of facilities for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
The ambitious plan includes building the Talanta Sports Complex (Jamhuri, Nairobi) and extensive renovations of Nyayo National Stadium, Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
The Renovation efforts for Moi International Sports Centre - Kasarani, Nyayo National Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadia will include pitch rehabilitation, enhanced facilities, ICT infrastructure, canopy installation, and Hustler Bazaars.

These upgrades are designed to meet the high standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for this prestigious continental event.
Beyond AFCON 2027, these initiatives will position Kenya as a competitive sporting destination and unlock economic opportunities while fostering sports development,” the statement added.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is however yet to confirm the official hosts of the 2024 edition.

Senegal are the defending champions having beaten hosts Algeria 1-0 in the 2022 edition.
