Invincible Kabras Sugar sink rivals KCB to win 23/24 Kenya Cup title

Kabras Sugar produced a dominant display on Saturday, March 6, 2024 to successfully defend their Kenya Cup title as they claimed their first three-peat.

The Carlos Katywa-coached side hammered their arch-rivals KCB Rugby Club 29-5 in the encounter which was staged at the Kakamega Showground.

Kabras took lead early in the first half with the try coming courtesy of Walter Okoth after a brilliant dummy from Brian Tanga sold the KCB defense. Ntabeni Dukisa nailed the conversion to give the Sugar men a 7-0 lead.

A few minutes later Dukisa made it 10-0 for the hosts after slotting in a penalty before Kevin Wekesa added an unconverted try to give Kabras Sugar a huge 15- 0 lead.

The situation got worse for the Bankers when they were reduced to 14 men after their captain Griffins Musila was sent to the sin bin following an infraction.

The hosts continued with their eye-catching performance which resulted in the third try of the game touched down by Dukisa who got up to also slot in the conversion as Kabras led 22-0 after only 24 minutes played.

With a few minutes remaining to the end of first half, KCB managed to get their first try of the match through Vincent Onyala who touched down at the corner to reduce the deficit to 22-5 at the break.

The two clubs returned from the break more focused and organized. As the match went on, KCB were once again reduced to 14 men after Elvis Olukusi was sent to the sin bin.

Kabras Sugar’s final try of the game through Tanga with the talented Ntabeni making a successful conversion to give his side a 29 – 5 lead and in the process completely sink KCB’s ship.

The victory helped Kabras to lift the coveted title and join the likes of Nondies, KCB, Kenya Harlequin and Impala as the only sides in the history of the tournament to win the Kenya Cup three times in a row.

The Western region-based club finished the season without testing a single defeat for the second season in a row, a rare occurrence in the top flight league.
