NAIROBI, Kenya- Nakuru RFC are charged for a strong finishing to the Stanbic National Sevens Series after snapping the dominance of Homeboyz RFC over the weekend by claiming the Driftwood 7s title in Mombasa.

Kenya Shujaa 7s regular Nelson Oyoo crossed the whitewash for the sudden death try that gave Wanyore a 12-7 victory over Mwamba RFC in the closely contested decider at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday.

Speaking after their victory that ended a run of three series tournaments victories by the Deejays, Nakuru head coach, Mitch Ochola, hailed his charges for claiming the top honours for the first time this term.

“It’s been a bit of everything, tight and good competition from our rivals. We are happy that we got what we came here to get finally.

“I’m happy the boys took the challenge and came out and about our prospects at the Dala 7s and for us is to take it in our stride and the rest will come when we return to our base in Nakuru,” the former Strathmore Leos boss stated.

Leaders Homeboyz finished fourth in Mombasa after losing the bronze medal clash 14-5 during the tournament that started on a sour note when Blak Blad RFC and Mean Machine RFC were forced to withdraw after they were involved in a road accident at Mtito Andei en route to the competition.

Frantic closing

Ochola predicted a frantic closing to the series ahead of the Dala 7s (September 8 and 9) in Kisumu and the Christie 7s in Nairobi (September 15 and 16) as he tipped his side to vie for the cup titles.

“It will get tighter because this is where clubs pick up after playing four tournaments and the understanding of how other teams are playing is better.

“We have seen things we had not seen before the finishing levels, how we approach the games and the game of sevens is a big ask,” he added.

The Wanyore coach further attributed their victory to the edge given by Shujaa stars such as speedster Oyoo who decided the Driftwood final.

“Its good to have the inclusion of national team players that have added the experience in the squad and some sought of bounce,” Ocholla offered.

In the bronze fixture, Vincent Onyala notched the double in each half with Samuel Asati and Shaban Ahmed adding the extras as Jeff Oluoch scored a corner post try for Homeboyz.

Kenya Harlequins RFC lifted the Challenge Trophy as they beat their next-door neighbours, Impala Saracens 15-7.
