NAIROBI, Kenya- Women’s World Boxing Council (WBC) silver super-lightweight champion, Judy Waguthii, was on Monday named the StarTimes/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month of May.

“It’s such a good feeling and always a great pleasure to be recognized alongside Kenya’s world-beating middle and long distance runners and indeed other great sports personalities from other disciplines.

“The surprise is quite inspirational ahead of my two upcoming fights. With such motivation and recognition, I can only hope for the very best,” Waguthii said after receiving a 43-inch StarTimes digital television set, a personalized trophy and KSh100,000 courtesy of the award sponsors.

Waguthii captured the global crown with a unanimous point’s decision against Prisca Vicot of France in Glattbrug, Switzerland and she is gearing for an eight round non-fight against Commonwealth Champion Anisha Basheel from Malawi in Nairobi on September 8.

Top contender 

Waguthii, 33, dominated the 10 rounder scoring 100 against Vicot’s 92 with the victory making her a top contender for the WBC World Female Super Lightweight title held by Érica Anabella Farías from Argentina.

She became the second boxer after WBC super-bantamweight women’s champion, Fatuma Zarika (December 2017) to receive the domestic monthly award.

Waguthii beat Kenya women’s rugby 7 stars Janet Akelo and Sinaida Aura to the May award and joins an illustrious cast of domestic sports personalities who have received the recognition this year.

Hockey keeper Cynthia Onyango (January), KPA’s basketball forward Felmas Adhiambo (February), three-time World Half Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor (March) and 800m runner Wycliffe Kinyamal (April) are the other awardees.

“StarTimes has endeavoured to recognise and reward excellence in sports. This is meant to also inspire stakeholders in the sports fraternity to progressively support the diverse disciplines for both health and financial benefits as a career,” Marketing Director, Japheth Akhulia, remarked when making the presentation.
