VIHIGA, Kenya- Vihiga United FC striker Amos Kigadi is fired up to inspire his side to an improved finish in the new 2018/19 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) season following their rough introduction to the top flight last term.

Kigadi recovered from the sidelines to play an instrumental role for Vihiga to remain in the SPL on their debut and was rewarded on Thursday morning when he scooped the SportPesa/SJAK Monthly Player Award for September/October at Kulundu Stadium.

“I wasn’t expecting to win this award and I thank my teammates and coach for motivating me to do the best that I could.

“Next season I will have to work harder to prove my worth and I'm ready to do all it takes and targeting 20 goals in the league next season. I'm sure I can achieve it,” Kigadi charged.

“It means a lot to me especially since I struggled with injury for part of the season. I wasn’t happy being on the side lines and I came back with the intention of helping the team stay in the league, which I thank God that I could,” the marksman told SportPesa News after making history as the first Vihiga player to receive the gong.

Ulinzi opener

Propelled by the forward who received KSh100,000, a 49-inch LG television and a trophy for the award, Vihiga lost one of their last six games to nail a 12th finish on 41 points to ward off the danger of a swift return to the second-tier National Super League they won in 2017.

Kigadi netted in their victories over Posta Rangers FC (1-0), champions Gor Mahia FC (2-0) and Nakumatt FC (2-0) besides laying three assists as the County Government of Vihiga-sponsored team escaped the drop.

Stalemates against Sony Sugar FC (1-1) and the six-goal thriller against Kariobangi Sharks FC (3-3) were the other results in their sizzling finish to their maiden SPL campaign.

“We believe it is not the last time that you will bring it here again. This will motivate the entire community and the team to do their best and we are ready for the new season,” Vihiga Chief Executive Officer Chrystotom Agava underlined.

The ground-breaking award ceremony attracted a sizeable crowd at Kulundu where the team trained in readiness for the forthcoming campaign.

Vihiga open their SPL season by hosting local giants Ulinzi Stars on December 9 before travelling to Chemelil Sugar FC and hosting Sony Sugar FC on December 15 and 23.
