SJAK Tournament To Mark World Sports Journalist Day In October

Fourteen media houses will take part in the event with additional teams formed by sports bloggers and freelancers at MISC, Kasarani

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) will belatedly mark the World Sports Journalists Day on October 13 with an inter-media tournament at MISC, Kasarani stadium. 

Fourteen media houses will take part in the event with additional teams formed by sports bloggers and freelancers. The events to be contested include football, tag of war, egg race, sack race and 4x100m relays.

Leading financial institution KCB Bank and beverage manufacturers Coca-Cola on Thursday boosted the competition by injecting cash donations, the later offering KSh500,000 while the former giving KSh250,000.

Overall winners will pocket KSh75,000 and trophies while runners up and second runners up are in line for KSh50,000 and KSh30,000 in that order.

It will be the fourth time since 2014 that SJAK is marking the World Sports Journalists Day that is ordinarily celebrated globally on July 2.

"Constraints sometimes mean that we don't observe the important day with the rest of the world but when everything is set we mark it.

Hectic year

"This year has been hectic especially around the dates we ought to have marked it but I'm happy it is going down. Let us all unite and celebrate and network among ourselves." SJAK president Chris Mbaisi said

Coca-Cola are making their maiden support for the event while it is the third season for KCB in activities marking the day. Both sponsors will also field teams to compete with participating media houses.

Tournament rules as well as the draw for the highly anticipated event will take place next week.

KCB Corporate Communication Manager Peter Mwaura lauded SJAK's efforts in disseminating sports stories.

"The sports media plays a big role in highlighting achievements of our athletes locally and internationally. We are committed to supporting SJAK in that course and thank them for the good work they have always done." Mwaura said.

Participating media houses include: KBC, Standard Group, Nation Media Group, Royal Media, Radio Africa, Mediamax, Capital, Qwetu Radio, Ghetto Radio, Homeboyz Radio, Lolwe, Ebru TV, Kass, ATG, Bloggers, Freelancers, Coca Cola and KCB.
