NAIROBI, Kenya- Olympian and AIBA Africa Welterweight champion, Rayton ‘Boom Boom’ Okwiri floored Uganda’s Patrick Amote in the second round in a men’s middleweight non-title bout to sign off the Nairobi Fight Night undercard in style on Saturday night in Nairobi.

Okwiri's emphatic second round Technical Knock Out of Amote crowned the countdown to the main event- the WBC women Super Bantamweight title fight between Fatuma Zarika and Yamileth Mercado- that also saw George Onyango, 21, defeat countryman Fred Nyakesa 2-1 on split decision in the opening fight.

The second offering of the day ended in a draw in an all-Kenyan female six-round slugfest between Charity Mukami and Florence Muthoni.

Chants of Okwiri! Okwiri! Okwiri! rent the air as the former AIBA Pro-boxer attacked the Ugandan without mercy amid cheers from the elated audience in the eight round bout.

“This fight will not go for more than four rounds, I’m going to knock him (Amote) down as early as I can,” Okwiri, 32, underlined in a pre-match interview.

True to his word, the Kenya Prisons Services pugilist sent Amote to the canvas thrice, the first in 1:45 of the opening round with a left hook.

Amote had nowhere to hide in the second where he kissed the canvas at 1:20 after he was sent by a strong uppercut from the popular Kenyan pugilist.

Soldiering on, the visitor resorted to holding and ducking but this could not save him from Okwiri’s right hook that knocked him off at the bell (2:59) in the second of the scheduled eight round.

Paid ranks

Okwiri’s tale of the tape, after joining the paid ranks on February 4, 2017, now stands at three wins and a draw after the victory over Amote.

Onyango from Pal Pal Gymnasium, 21, beat Fred Nyakesa of Kariobangi Social Hall on split point decision (60-57, 57-58 and 58-56) to win the men’s lightweight six round non-title bout that flagged off the programme.

Nyakesa, 38, was ferocious in the clash but unfortunately failed to land scoring punches on his streetwise young rival.

On the other hand, Onyango who turned professional last year was slow but sure with his right hand that landed him most of the points.

“I’m grateful for the win. My opponent was very experienced but I used tact to dislodge him.

“I was encouraged by the whole set-up as the state of the art ring reminded me of the high profile boxing in Europe which I only watch on television,” Onyango emphasised after the victory.

The win has taken Onyango’s ratings to six fights including four wins, a loss and a draw since he turned pro.

The women’s Super-Middleweight clash pitting veteran fighters Mukami and Muthoni, both from Pal Pal, ended unsurprisingly in a draw after a six-round slugfest.

Hawkeyed and calculative Mukami, who was the favourite, scored 57-57, 59-58 and 57-59 to mark her return in boxing after one-year hiatus.

Muthoni kept on shifting her stance during the duel; a secret that saw her forced a tie against Mukami who has been her rival for ages.
