KIKUYU, Kenya- Francis Nzwili of Royal Nairobi Golf Club scored a total of 34 stable ford  points to emerge overall winner of Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK) Golf Tournament held at par 72 Sigona Golf Club in Kikuyu at the weekend.

He fired 19 points in the front nine and 15 in the back to carry the day in the competition that attracted 39 players.

“This is a great course but the fairways were not holding, the greens were fast so we struggled with our puttings.

“I did a lot of practice in the course of the week ahead of the contest, I believe this is what gave me an edge over my opponents,”the handicap 20 player underlined.

It was the second time that the father of three was bagging the coveted title having recorded his first victory at home in 2016.

The 41-year-old said the biting cold at Sigona was the greatest barrier for many contestants who had their focus on the trophy.

“It was chilly, it was difficult to putt in some holes because of the fog, but we waded through to complete the competition,” he underscored.

The Head of Operations at Continental Re-Insurance has a bit of advice to those engaging in the game or are intending to embrace the sport.

“Golf is humbling, it not only makes you fit but develops your focus in life. Just remember your most important shot is the next shot. Same applies to life,” he highlighted.

The First nine was awarded to home golfer, H.Ndaiga, who raked in 15 points. Second nine category went to E.Ngundi with 14.Lady winner was E.Gathoni with 24.

Nearest to the pin winner was George Eshugi while Longest Drive category went to Edwin Miano.

Business connections

Club captain, Lawrence Nganga, noted that the challenge was beneficial to their club commercially.

“We managed to raise some good amount as this was a charity event. The competitors also spend money sampling our food and drinks which earned us profits,” he said.

“The contest was also used to create awareness on the importance of insurance. The players also had a chance to mingle, interact and make new friends and business connections,”Nganga emphasized.
