Kothbiro At 40: Sinema Thrash Piuretto To Set Up Bundes Semi Clash

Kingstone FC will battle Githurai United FC in the other last four encounter at the venue on Saturday afternoon

NAIROBI, Kenya- Sinema FC hammered Piuretto FC 3-0 to sail into the semi finals of the annual Kothbiro football tournament at Umeme Grounds in Ziwani, Nairobi on Friday evening.

Steve Opuko scored a brace  in the 13th and 89th minutes as team captain, Kevin Oresso, added the third in the 50th to toss Piuretto out of the 40th edition of the tournament.

The two sides were among the 33 clubs  in the competition that were boosted by kits from the sponsors.

“We were eliminated in the group stages last year so this victory means a lot to us, we hope to reach the final where we will officially unveil the new uniforms we were given today,” Sinema FC captain, Oresso underlined.

Sinema will now battle Bundes FC who thrashed Black Mamba FC 3-1 in the other quarterfinal played on Friday morning.

Nicholas Ndendwa scored an 11-minute second half hat-trick to grant Bundes the deserved win as Maxwell Oyandi pulled one back for stunned Mamba in the 87th.

Former Gor Mahia FC defender, Evans Anguyo, missed a penalty at the death as his side Shauri Moyo Sportive FC went down 1-2 to Kingstone FC who qualified for the semis.

John Walubaka tapped in a Clifford Omondi’s cross to put Kingstone 1-0 ahead in the seventh and he leaders continued to pile pressure as Eugene Oduor’s  screamer was blocked by Sportive custodian in the 20th.

Walubaka then curled a beautiful shot which went over the bar in the 41st before the sides proceeded for half time with Kingstone in the lead.

Oduor was on the prowl on resumption and his effort paid off in the 65th when he made a solo run on the left flank before slotting the ball in with a powerful shot for a 2-0 lead.

Fredy Eninga pulled one back for Sportive in the 85th before they were awarded a penalty in the 90th after Eninga was brought down in the box unfortunately the redemption chance was squandered by Anguyo.

Kingstone will now face Githurai United FC,who edged Cheza Ukipenda FC 5-4 on post match penalties, in the first semi slated for Saturday afternoon.

Githurai battled to a 1-1 draw with Cheza Ukipenda in regulation time as Alex Libesi  scored with a header for Cheza Ukipenda in the 58th before Githurai leveled through former Gor Mahia striker, Amos Nondi, in the 90th.

Nondi successfully converted the penalty which was awarded to Githurai after Raymond Fikirini was fouled inside the box.

Tournament winners will bag KSHs300,0000 with beaten finalists pocketing KSHs75,000. Bronze winners will take home KSHs50,000 in the annual grassroots football tournament.

Kenya international keeper, Arnold Origi will reward the tournament’s top scorer and golden glove winner.

As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, four veteran teams will fight off for the Wazee's title. A1000 Wazee will incorporate players from Kaloleni and neighborhoods around Jogoo Road and Mombasa Road, Pumwani veterans will have players from Pumwani and areas around Eastleigh, Shauri Moyo and Buru Buru among others.

Mashteam Legends will include players from Ziwani, Kariokor, CBD and Westlands with a Kothbiro All Stars side that will have all team managers, coaches and media.
