SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom- Mark Hughes believes his players need to show more belief in their own ability after Sunday's defeat to Chelsea FC at St Mary’s.

Danny Ings missed one glaring chance shortly before Eden Hazard broke the deadlock in the first half, while Ryan Bertrand was off target from similarly close range before Ross Barkley struck the killer second.

Álvaro Morata’s late third cast a slightly harsh reflection, but Hughes felt his side showed the visitors too much respect.

“I thought in the second half we stuck at it, without really having the opportunity to build momentum and get everybody pushing forward,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to accept you were second best on the day. We were a little bit fearful of the ability of Chelsea.

“We needed to show a bit more belief in how good we actually are. I think today we were a little bit too respectful of a good Chelsea team.

“We know we’re not going to create huge amounts of chances against a good Chelsea team, albeit their keeper has made a couple of outstanding saves along with the two chances, but that didn’t happen.

“We haven’t performed at anything like the level we did in the games against Wolves and Everton, so that’s a disappointment because we know what we’re capable of.”

Southampton will travel to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, October 20 after the conclusion of the FIFA International Break.
