Homeboyz Focus To Cement Lead At Driftwood Sevens

NAIROBI, Kenya- Menengai Homeboyz RFC head coach, Paul Murunga, says his focus is to bag the fourth leg of the National Sevens Rugby Circuit, the Driftwood Sevens, at Mombasa Sports Club in coast this weekend so as to be safe in the series.

The club has already won the first three outings; Prinsloo, Sepetuka and Kabeberi and is now focus on Driftwood to cement  lead in the best of six series competition.

“Our target in Mombasa is to top the pool. We want to play well on day one to qualify for quarterfinals,”Murunga told SportPesa News on Monday.

“Opening matches in these tournaments are always crucial because they set the pace in the challenge. So, I want to warn Menengai Oilers to expect a tough battle in our starting fixture on Saturday,”Murunga underlined.

“So far I’m glad that my boys have rose to the occasion to win the first three events. If we emerge champions this weekend we shall have reduced the pressure in the next two legs in Kisumu and Nairobi,”Murunga underscored.

Homeboyz RFC, who are also the series leaders, landed in pool A alongside Oilers, Mean Machine and hosts Regional Logistics Mombasa in the Driftwood Sevens pooling done by the Kenya Rugby Union on Monday.

Top Fry Nakuru, the beaten finalists at the Kabeberi Sevens, is in Pool B alongside Blak Blad, Resolution Kisii and Silverstone Kisumu with KCB, Kabras Sugar, Strathmore Leos and Resolution Impala Saracens looking to sort themselves out in Pool C which on paper looks like the group of death.

Kenya Harlequin, Stanbic Mwamba, Nondescripts and Makueni rounds- up Pool D.

Center post

Meanwhile, Homeboyz RFC won the third round of the circuit, the Kabeberi Sevens, by beating Top Fry Nakuru 19-7 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday evening.

Captain Leonard Mugaisi was first on the scoreboard as he landed a center post try for the DJz with Johnston Olindi adding the twos.

Nakuru’s Nelson Oyoo was quick to spot a gap and swing through it equalizing the scores as Donald Aluoch kicked in the conversion.

Second half saw Alvin Otieno and Olindi land a try each with the latter converting his shot succcesfully. This  has seen Homeboyz remain top of the table  in the circuit with 66 points.
