Kenya to fight it off with Guinea Bissau, Madagascar , Mauritania, Uganda and Zimbabwe in men’s national team of the year category
- National team Harambee Stars have been nominated for the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards to be held on January 8, 2019 in Dakar, Senegal
- Neighbours Uganda edged Cape Verde 1-0 to qualify for AFCON for the second time in a row on November 17 as Mauritania punched their way to the Africa premier football event for the first time with a 2-1 win against Botswana aday later
- CAF stated Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year awards are based on the nominees performance this year, 34 competitors will fight it out in men’s category while the women’s has 15
CAIRO, Egypt- National team Harambee Stars have been nominated in the Team of the Year category during the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards to be held on January 8 in Dakar, Senegal.
Stars will battle it out with Guinea Bissau, Madagascar , Mauritania, Uganda and Zimbabwe for the prize.
“The nomination comes following our outstanding performances in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers where Kenya picked up seven points from three matches.
“The team is thus in prime position for a place in next year’s continental showpiece,” Football Kenya Federation said in a communique on Friday.
“Further, Stars came second at the Hero Intercontinental Cup in India, a four-nation tournament that also had Chinese Taipei and New Zealand taking part,” the federation added.

Cranes and Mamelodi Sundowns keeper, Denis Onyango, is the only East African who is in the race for the African Player of the year Award alongside Gabon and Arsenal talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Other contestants for player of the year gong are Naby Keita (Guinea, Liverpool),Ahmed Musa (Nigeria, Al-Nassr, Alex Iwobi (Nigeria,Arsenal), Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast, Crystal Palace), Mohamed Salah (Egypt, Liverpool) among others.
CAF said Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year awards are based on the nominees performance this year, 34 competitors will fight it out in men’s category while the women’s has 15.
