NAIROBI, Kenya- As Harambee Starlets step up preparations for their 2018 CAF Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) campaign on Wednesday when they face tournament hosts Black Queens of Ghana in an international friendly, fans can give them support by watching them in action for free.

On Monday, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced the waiver of gate charges for the fixture that will be played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani starting at 4pm local time (+3GMT).

The Black Queens arrived in the country on Sunday night with their head coach, Hayford Bashuri noting the encounter will offer both teams good build up for their AWCON campaign later this month.

Kenya will play Uganda in another friendly before departing for Ghana next Wednesday (November 14) for the continental women’s football showpiece that will act as a qualifier for the 2019 FIFA Women World Cup.

“We opted to play Kenya because of our good working relationship and also because they will be taking part in the AWCON tournament like we will.

Good shape

“This friendly match will be good for us to not only gauge the standard of Women football in East Africa but to also get in good shape for the tournament,” Bashuri noted.

Starlets qualified for their second successive AWCON following the ban of two-time champions Equatorial Guinea who were found guilty by CAF of fielding an ineligible player when they faced Kenya in the final round of qualifiers.

Kenya went down 3-2 on aggregate before FKF lodged an appeal against the Equatoguineans who were also suspended from World Cup for the same reasons.

Starlets lost all three of their group matches at the 2016 final in Cameroon, going down to West African giants Ghana (3-1), Mali (3-1) and champions Nigeria Super Falcons.

Kenya were once again drawn against the titleholders, beaten finalists South Africa Bayana Bayana and Zambia in the eight-team finals that will take place between November 17 and December 1.

The top three finishers will earn a ticket to represent Africa at the World Cup set for France.

This is the second entry fee waiver for a match involving the national senior team after the Government let football fans enter Kasarani without charge for the 2019 AFCON qualifier featuring Harambee Stars and Ethiopia last month.

In front of a capacity-filled stadium, Stars obliged to inch closer to qualification for the tournament when they blanked the Walya Antelopes 3-0.
